Fonts are software and are licensed, not sold. When you buy a font, you acquire certain rights to use that Font Software.
These rights are governed by an End User License Agreement (EULA). The license you need depends on how and where the font will be used.
If your project falls outside the standard options below, contact us at hello@protype.studio .
What license do I need?
Desktop License — for installing the font in design software and creating finished artwork.
WebFont License — for using the font as live text on a website.
App License — for embedding the font inside a mobile or desktop application.
Broadcasting, gaming, e-books, software, SaaS, enterprise deployment and other specialised commercial uses may require Extended Licensing.
For extended usage, contact hello@protype.studio .
What does a Desktop License cover?
A Desktop License allows you to install the font on the number of users or devices included in your purchased Coverage.
You can use it for standard design and production work, including branding, packaging, advertising, publications, posters, presentations, signage, merchandise graphics, campaign artwork and other finished creative work.
You may export finished work as PDFs, images, videos, print-ready files or outlined vector artwork.
Can I use a Desktop License for client work?
Yes. You may use your licensed Protype fonts to create finished work for clients.
Your client does not automatically receive your font license. If they need to install or work directly with the Font Software, they need their own appropriate Protype license.
Can I send the font files to a printer, developer or contractor?
Only when they are covered by the applicable license and genuinely need access for the licensed project.
Whenever possible, send outlined, flattened or exported files instead of the original Font Software.
Access to the font does not give a contractor, printer, developer or production partner permission to use it for other projects.
Can I convert the font to outlines?
Yes.
Once text has been converted into ordinary vector artwork, you may edit those shapes as part of your design.
This does not give permission to modify, rebuild or redistribute the original Font Software.
Can I modify the font itself?
Not without written permission from Protype Foundry.
Changing the actual Font Software — including glyphs, spacing, kerning, metrics, OpenType features, font names or character sets — requires permission.
If you need a customised version, contact hello@protype.studio .
Do I need a WebFont License for website graphics?
Not if the font is only used inside a static image, exported graphic or outlined artwork.
You need a WebFont License when the actual font files are used to display live text on the website.
What does a WebFont License cover?
A WebFont License allows the font to appear as live text on the website or websites included in your purchased Coverage.
The exact limits may depend on domains, traffic, pageviews or another measurement shown at checkout.
Webfont files must not be intentionally exposed or offered as standalone downloads.
Do staging and development websites need separate licenses?
No. Development and staging environments used exclusively for the same licensed website are included.
Separate public websites or unrelated domains may require additional Coverage.
What does an App License cover?
An App License allows the Font Software to be embedded inside the application covered by your order.
This may include mobile or desktop applications depending on the Coverage purchased.
Users of the application must not be able to extract, download, install or independently reuse the Protype Font Software.
What if my app, website or team grows?
You can upgrade your existing license.
You normally do not need to purchase the same font again from the beginning.
If you need more users, devices, domains, traffic, applications or another form of expanded Coverage, contact us with your order details.
What counts as Extended Licensing?
Extended Licensing may be required for broadcasting, television, streaming, gaming, e-books, software, SaaS, online design tools, editable templates and user-generated content platforms.
It may also apply to server-side use, enterprise deployment, hardware, OEM use or other specialised commercial applications.
If you are unsure whether your project requires Extended Licensing, email hello@protype.studio with a short description of the project.
How do I request an Extended License?
Send us the typeface name, what you are building, how the font will be used and the expected scale of the project.
This may include the expected number of users, websites, applications, products, platforms or any other relevant usage information.
We will review the project and provide the appropriate license and Coverage.
Can I share the font files with another company or client?
No, unless they are specifically covered by your license.
A Protype license belongs to the person, company or organisation named in the order.
An unrelated company or client that needs direct access to the Font Software must obtain its own license.
Can I upload the fonts to cloud storage?
Yes, provided the storage is private and access is restricted to authorised users covered by your license.
Do not upload Protype Font Software to public folders, unrestricted shared drives, public repositories, file-sharing services or public download links.
Can I use Protype fonts with AI tools?
Using the font in a normal creative workflow that includes AI-assisted features is allowed.
You may not use Protype Font Software, source files or systematically extracted glyph data to train or fine-tune a model to reproduce the typeface, clone it or create a substitute font.
Where can I officially buy Protype fonts?
Protype fonts are currently officially sold or distributed through Protype's official store — checkout powered by Lemon Squeezy, MyFonts and YouWorkForThem / YWFT.
Protype no longer sells new typeface licenses through Gumroad.
Genuine purchases made through Protype's official Gumroad store while it was an authorised sales channel remain valid under the license supplied with those purchases.
Protype does not sell or distribute its typefaces through Telegram and does not operate an official Telegram sales or distribution channel.
What if I find a Protype font somewhere else?
A download or purchase from an unauthorised source does not provide a valid Protype license.
Do not redistribute, re-sell, share or publicly upload Protype Font Software, including free typefaces and freebies.
If you are unsure whether a seller, website, listing, account or download source is official, contact hello@protype.studio before purchasing or downloading.
How do I prove that I own a license?
Keep your order confirmation, receipt, invoice or authorised distributor purchase record.
These records identify the licensed Font or Package, License Type, Coverage and License Holder associated with your purchase.
Are font purchases refundable?
Because fonts are digital products delivered immediately, purchases are generally final after the files have been supplied or downloaded, except where applicable law requires otherwise.
If you purchased the wrong Coverage, accidentally purchased the same product twice or experience a genuine technical problem, contact us and we will review the situation.
I'm still not sure which license I need.
Send a short description of your project to hello@protype.studio .
Tell us which typeface you want to use and how you plan to use it. We will help you choose the appropriate License Type and Coverage.
FONTS ARE SOFTWARE AND ARE LICENSED, NOT SOLD.
YOUR LICENSE TYPE AND COVERAGE DETERMINE HOW THE FONT SOFTWARE MAY BE USED.
DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE, RE-SELL, SHARE OR PUBLICLY UPLOAD PROTYPE FONT SOFTWARE, INCLUDING FREE TYPEFACES.
PROTYPE DOES NOT OPERATE AN OFFICIAL TELEGRAM SALES OR DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL.
