Protype License Agreement

Version 1.0

Your Protype license is defined by three things: the font or package you purchase, the License Type you choose, and the Coverage included in your order. This agreement explains what your license allows, how to use your fonts responsibly, and when additional licensing may be needed. Purchasing a Protype font grants you the right to use the font software under the terms of your order. Ownership of the font software and its design remains with Protype Foundry and/or the credited type designer. Your purchase confirmation, invoice, or receipt is part of this agreement. By downloading, installing, embedding, or using a Protype font, you agree to these terms.
01. Your License
Every Protype purchase is based on three selections:

Font or Package
The specific font files included in your purchase, whether a Single Weight, selected package, Complete Family, Variable Font, or another available option.

License Type
The intended use of the font. Protype offers Desktop, WebFont, and App licenses where available. Other uses may require extended licensing.

Coverage
The scale of permitted use, such as the number of users, devices, websites, applications, or another limit defined at checkout.
The selections recorded in your order determine your licensing rights. A License Type or additional font package not included in your purchase is not automatically covered.
02. License Holder
The license belongs to the person, company, or organisation named in the order.
It may not be transferred, resold, sublicensed, or assigned to an unrelated person, company, organisation, or client without written permission from Protype.
Unless otherwise stated in your order, the license is perpetual for the Font, License Type, and Coverage originally purchased.
03. What a Desktop License Covers
A Desktop License allows authorised users to install and work with Protype fonts in desktop design and production applications.

Font Installation
Install the supplied font files, such as .otf or .ttf, within the number of users and devices specified in your purchased Coverage.

Design & Print
Create finished physical and digital designs, including packaging, posters, publications, editorial layouts, advertising, stationery, presentations, signage, merchandise graphics, campaign artwork, and other standard design materials.

Finished & Exported Files
Export and share completed work as PDFs, images, videos, print-ready documents, or outlined vector artwork. These files may be delivered to clients or production partners without transferring the original font software.

Working With Clients
You can create finished designs for clients using your licensed fonts. Your license, however, remains yours.
If a client needs to install or work directly with the font files, they must obtain the appropriate Protype license.

Outlined Lettering
Once text has been converted into ordinary vector artwork, you may edit its shapes as part of your design. This does not include modifying the original font software.
04. Uses Beyond Desktop
A Desktop License is intended for creating finished artwork, not for embedding or distributing the font software itself.

Other uses may require a separate license, including WebFont embedding, apps, software, broadcasting, gaming, e-books, online platforms, server-side use, enterprise deployment, and other extended commercial applications.

WebFont and App licenses may be purchased directly when the required options are available in the Protype shop.

For specialised uses or Coverage not listed at checkout, contact hello@protype.studio.
05. What a WebFont License Covers
A WebFont License allows the licensed Protype font to be used as live text on a website.
This may include normal webfont implementation using technologies such as CSS @font-face.
The license applies only to the websites, domains, traffic levels, or other Coverage included in your purchase.
Development and staging environments used only for the same licensed website are included.

WebFont Protection:
Webfont files must be implemented in a reasonable way that prevents them from being intentionally offered as standalone downloadable font files.
Website visitors must not be given permission to extract or independently reuse the font.

If your website usage exceeds the Coverage originally purchased, the license must be upgraded.
06. What a WebFont License Does Not Cover
A WebFont License does not automatically cover:
- mobile applications;
- desktop applications;
- software products;
- games;
- e-books;
- broadcasting;
- editable design systems;
- or other forms of font embedding.

These uses may require an App License or Extended License.
07. What an App License Covers
An App License allows the licensed font to be embedded inside an application or digital product covered by your order.

This may include:
- mobile applications;
- desktop applications;
- and other approved app environments.
The font must remain part of the licensed product.

Users must not be able to extract, download, install, or independently reuse the Protype font files.
Your App License is limited to the Coverage stated in your order.
If you launch additional applications or exceed that Coverage, you may need an additional or upgraded license.
08. What an App License Does Not Cover
An App License does not automatically allow the font to be used as a font-selection or design tool for your customers.
Products that allow users to create, customise, export, or generate their own typography may require an Extended or Custom License.
09. Extended & Custom Uses
Some projects need permissions beyond those provided by a standard license.

Examples include broadcasting, television, film, streaming productions, gaming, e-books, software, SaaS platforms, editable templates, online design tools, enterprise deployment, hardware, OEM products, and other specialised commercial applications.

If your intended use is not covered by your selected License Type or Coverage, we can help you arrange the appropriate license.

How to request extended licensing?
Email hello@protype.studio with the typeface name, a short description of your project, how the font will be used, and the expected scale of use.

We'll review your requirements and provide a suitable licensing option.
10. Choosing the Correct Coverage
Always select the Coverage that reflects your actual usage.

For example, Desktop licenses may be offered for a specific number of authorised users and devices.
WebFont and App licenses may use different measurements.
Your purchase page will show the available options before checkout.
11. Extending Your License
Your licensing needs may change as your work grows.

If you need additional users, devices, websites, traffic, applications, or another form of expanded use, you can request an extension to your existing license.

You won't normally need to purchase the same font package again from the beginning.

Simply contact hello@protype.studio with your order details and updated requirements. We'll help you arrange the additional rights or Coverage needed.
12. Teams & Contractors
Only people covered by your purchased Coverage may use or access the font files.

Authorised access may include employees, designers, developers, contractors, agencies, printers, or production partners where necessary for the licensed work.

Giving someone access to the font does not give them an independent license for other projects.

Where possible, provide finished or outlined artwork instead of transferring font files.
13. Storage & Backups
You may keep reasonable backup copies of your licensed font files.

Font files may be stored on private local or cloud storage where access is restricted to authorised users.

You may not place Protype fonts in:
  • public download folders;
  • unrestricted shared drives;
  • public repositories;
  • public GitHub repositories;
  • public cloud links;
  • open asset libraries;
  • file-sharing services;
  • or any other location accessible to unlicensed users.
14. What You May Not Do
Your license permits you to use Protype fonts within your purchased rights. It does not permit you to distribute or commercially exploit the font software itself.

Without written permission from Protype, you may not:
  • Resell or redistribute: Sell, sublicense, republish, or distribute the font files, whether original, renamed, converted, or modified.
  • Share with unlicensed users: Provide font files to people or organisations outside your purchased Coverage.
  • Make fonts publicly accessible: Upload the files to public repositories, unrestricted download links, file-sharing services, or other publicly accessible locations.
  • Distribute fonts through products: Make the font files independently downloadable or reusable through a website, application, product, or service.
  • Misrepresent ownership: Remove ownership information or claim the font software or typeface design as your own.
  • Reproduce the typeface as another font: Systematically extract glyphs or font data to recreate, distribute, or sell a replacement or competing typeface.
You retain the freedom to create and distribute finished artwork within your license. These restrictions apply to the font software and its unauthorised reuse or distribution.
15. Modifying the Font
You may convert text into outlines and modify those outlines as part of your finished design.
You may not modify the actual Protype font software without written permission.

This includes changing:
  • glyphs;
  • spacing;
  • kerning;
  • metrics;
  • character sets;
  • OpenType features;
  • internal font names;
  • font tables;
  • or other parts of the font software.

If you need a customised version, additional language support, character additions, or another font modification, contact Protype.
16. AI & Automated Font Generation
Normal use of Protype fonts inside creative software that includes AI-assisted features is permitted.

However, you may not use Protype font files, source files, or systematically extracted glyph data to:
  • train a font-generation model;
  • fine-tune a model to reproduce the typeface;
  • clone the typeface;
  • generate a substitute font;
  • build a font-generation service;
  • or create and distribute a competing typeface based on Protype's font data.
17. Intellectual Property
Purchasing a license gives you usage rights only.

It does not transfer ownership of:
  • the Font Software;
  • typeface design;
  • copyright;
  • source files;
  • development files;
  • or other intellectual property belonging to Protype and/or the credited type designer.

Your original finished artwork created using the font remains yours, subject to the terms of your license.
18. Official Sales & Distribution
Protype fonts are currently available through three authorised sales and distribution channels:
  • Protype Official Store — Checkout powered by Lemon Squeezy.
  • MyFonts — myfonts.com
  • YouWorkForThem (YWFT) — youworkforthem.com
Gumroad is no longer an authorised sales channel for new Protype font purchases.

Genuine purchases made through Protype's official Gumroad store while it was an authorised channel remain valid under the license terms supplied at the time of purchase.

Any current listing outside our authorised channels should not be considered official unless confirmed by Protype in writing.

If you're unsure whether a seller or download source is authorised, contact hello@protype.studio before purchasing.
19. Unauthorised Sources
Obtaining a Protype font from an unauthorised source does not grant you a valid Protype license.

Unauthorised sources may include:
  • unofficial marketplaces;
  • pirated font websites;
  • file-sharing services;
  • shared cloud folders;
  • messaging groups;
  • Telegram channels;
  • or other unauthorised distributors.

If you are unsure whether a seller or download is official, contact us before purchasing:
20. Proof of License
Your:
  • order confirmation;
  • receipt;
  • invoice;
  • or authorised distributor purchase record

acts as proof of your license.
It may identify:
  • the Font or Package;
  • License Type;
  • Coverage;
  • License Holder;
  • purchase date;
  • price;
  • and any additional conditions.

Please keep your purchase record.
21. Refunds
Fonts are digital products and are normally delivered immediately after purchase.

For this reason, purchases are generally final after the font files have been supplied or downloaded, except where applicable law requires otherwise.

If you:
  • accidentally purchase the same product twice;
  • select the wrong Coverage;
  • or experience a genuine technical problem,
  • contact Protype.
Where appropriate, we may offer a reasonable solution such as a license adjustment, replacement, or upgrade.
22. Technical Support
If you experience a technical problem with a Protype font, contact:

Please include where possible:
  • font name;
  • font version;
  • operating system;
  • application;
  • and a description of the problem.
Protype will make a reasonable effort to investigate genuine font-related technical issues.
23. License Violations
Your license remains valid while you comply with these terms.

Serious or intentional misuse may result in termination of the license.

Examples include:
  • piracy;
  • resale;
  • public redistribution;
  • unauthorised sublicensing;
  • intentional font-file sharing;
  • or continued serious violation of this agreement.
If the issue is simply that your legitimate usage has grown beyond your purchased Coverage, Protype may instead require the appropriate upgrade.
24. Font Compatibility
Protype develops and tests its fonts with reasonable care.

However, operating systems, browsers, applications, plugins, and production environments may behave differently.

Protype cannot guarantee identical operation across every current or future third-party software environment.

If you encounter a technical problem, contact us, and we will make a reasonable effort to help.
25. Liability
To the extent permitted by applicable law, Protype is not responsible for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses resulting from the use of, or inability to use, the font software.

Nothing in this agreement removes rights that cannot legally be excluded.
26. Updates to This Agreement
Protype may publish updated versions of this agreement for future purchases.

A later version will not automatically reduce the rights granted under an earlier paid license.

The version associated with your purchase generally remains applicable unless:
  • you and Protype agree otherwise in writing;
  • you purchase an upgrade under updated terms;
  • or applicable law requires otherwise.

I’d use this as the new master Protype EULA. It now has a much clearer split between the everyday Desktop license, the WebFont/App options customers can select in the store, and genuinely extended uses that should come to you for a quote.

From complete type systems to refined glyph details, we design custom typography with clarity, personality, and long-term usability in mind.
